Abstract
A statistical study was performed for the 1,644 infants who were admitted to NICU at Seoul National University Children's Hospital from the opening in January, 1986 to December, 1991. Our main concern of this study was the change of birth weight
distribution and birth weight specific survival rate at each year and the subsequent changing pattern of morbidity during 6 year's observation period.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1. The proportion of the LBW and VLBW infants who were admitted to NICU was substantially increased during the observation period.
2. The overall survival rate of the infants was inversely related to birth weight and gestational age.
3. The survival rate of the LBW and VLBW infants was steadily increased at each year during the observation period and this improvement was mainly attributable to the improved survival for one or more berth weight group despite of the unfavorable
effect
of a worsening birth weight distribution. But, the survival of the extremely small infants with birth weight less than 1,000 gm was still very low.
4. The most plausible explanation for the improved survival was the progressive improvement in the perinatal and neonatal intensive technology.
5. The incidence of complications or other diseases associated with intensive care was markedly increased according to the improved survival.
So, we concluded that this increased trend in the proportion of small premature infants who need intensive care in our NICU would be persisted for some period in the future, and the higher quality of perinatal and neonatal intensive care would be
needed
to improved the survival and reduce the mortality and morbidity.
